What is Mae-Mae & Me
Mae-Mae & Me is a toddler language class led by speech therapists and designed to accelerate your child's ability to say their first words and phrases. Our classes incorporate speech therapy strategies proven to help kids say first words and phrases and are built around playful activities, including music, movement, and sensory experiences.
Why join Mae-Mae & Me
Around 12 months, children start to say their first word, and by 18 months, most children say about 10 words. By 2 years old, most kids are putting words together to say phrases. But, there are many children who are not hitting these milestones. Parents might be looking for guidance to support their child in developing words and phrases, and Mae- Mae & Me is a class designed to do just that! We've had families join for a variety of reasons, including:
They have reached out to the NYC Early Intervention program and are waiting for an evaluation or to find an EI speech therapist. In the meantime, they enroll their child in Mae-Mae & Me to begin receiving early language support.
Their child is receiving individual services through Early Intervention or private speech therapy, and they are looking for additional support. Mae- Mae & Me provides an opportunity for their child to receive additional speech therapy support while surrounded by peers who are working on similar goals.
The child did not qualify for Early Intervention, but is not meeting milestones for language development, and the family is still interested in helping them say more words and phrases.
The child is becoming frustrated when they can't effectively communicate.
The structure of Mae-Mae & Me
Each class is designed around a theme and a strategy. The theme guides us in choosing toys and activities based on the interests of the kids in the group- we'll collect this information when you enroll :) The strategy is a technique that speech therapists use in their interactions with toddlers to help them say their first words and phrases. Each class follows this structure:
Greeting song
Introduce strategy to caregivers
Song
Play activities guided by the speech therapist
Clean up song
Goodbye song
After class, the speech therapist will send an email recapping the strategy and a handout that families can reference to continue the learning at home.
