Each month, we curate a list of free activities in Brooklyn that we think would be fun and language-enriching! Take a look at our picks this month -
Lunar New Year Celebration at City Point
It's the Year of the Horse, and City Point in Downtown Brooklyn has a way for you and your family to celebrate the new year. I've been reading Lunar New Year books with my baby and am excited to join the festivities this month, both in Brooklyn and Chinatown. Reading books about an event or holiday can be a reflection of your own culture and/or provide insight into another person's traditions. It's a great way to preview an event as well! Living in New York, we have so many amazing experiences at our fingertips. Being able to read about Lunar New Year and then walk outside and celebrate with lion dances and more, is a very special experience.
Where: Albee Square, Downtown Brooklyn
When: Saturday, February 21st
Hopalong Andrew at Whole Foods in Gowanus
I took my 5-month-old to this class recently, and it was so cute! Hopalong Andrew is fun, lively, and sweet with all the children and caregivers. Music classes, such as this one, are an opportunity for kids to interact with peers (i.e., share space, share an experience, share, etc.), while also enjoying the show. There's so much value to being around other children and having the opportunity to navigate interactions in a supportive way!
Where: Whole Foods in Gowanus, Brooklyn, 2nd-floor dining area
When: Tuesdays at 10 am - check out Hopalong Andrew's Instagram for updates on his schedule
Storytime at Fontainhas
A caregiver and child story and music class in Dumbo! Like other activities we often share, this activity has the components of being language-enriching with a shared story time, while also providing a social activity for children to take part in and organically navigate dynamics that arise with the support of a caregiver. I'm hoping to join this activity on an upcoming Thursday!
Where: Fontainhas in Dumbo, Brooklyn
When: Thursdays 4:30-5:30 pm
