Our Neuro-affirming social groups
Updated: Sep 11
The goal of our social groups is to provide a positive, welcoming, and affirming environment where all participants. participants feel valued and successful. We strive to create a space that promotes individuality, celebrates differences, and supports our participants in feelings valued and successful.
To ensure that we are meeting these goals and maintaining a neuro- affirming environment, we stay up to date on the most current evidence-based practices and seek input from professionals in related fields, including psychology, occupational therapy, and education. We are also mindful of the biases we enter a space with and strive to challenge, dismantle and always be conscious of our privileges.
Before forming a social group, we gather information from families about how their child learns, their strengths, interests, and challenges. This information allows us to group participants with peers that have similar interests and are working toward similar goals.
We provide scaffolded and individualized support to our social group participants, based on their needs. Some examples of customized support include fidgets, movement breaks, supportive seating options, visual timers, visual plans, noise-canceling headphones, and opportunities to learn and explore through multiple modalities.
